Retailers worried this past holiday season due to there being 6 fewer days to spur holiday sales. Usually, there are 32 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but 2013 saw only 26 days. Despite weak in-store sales, retail hiring seemed to reach all-time highs during the 2013 holiday season. During the last 120 days of 2013, there were 993,000 jobs advertised in the retail trade industry, up about 20% compared to the same time period in 2012.

Sales related jobs were, not surprisingly, the most in-demand field by retailers. Hiring was up 18% for sales jobs in the retail industry over the last 120 days of 2013. Other fields with hiring increases were technology, management, and transportation jobs. The increase in online sales likely explains the 15% growth in tech demand. Management jobs include positions like Marketing and Human Resource managers. Due to a shorter sales period, many retailers turned to their marketing teams for promotions to drive foot traffic into their physical stores or web traffic to their sites. With online sales growing, more transportation and warehousing positions were available to handle the increased number of shipments.

Below are the 10 retailers with the most job ads during the last 120 days of 2013. Lowe's had the most available jobs during this time period, with over 64,000 being advertised online. Hiring by Lowe's increased 118% compared to 2012, more than doubling the number of jobs advertised.
